New measures to improve diagnosis of cancer are expected to be published this week as part of NHS England’s delivery plan for the next two years, reports BBC.co.uk. According to University College London Hospital’s chief medical officer, Kathy Pritchard-Jones, the average GP diagnoses six to eight new cases of cancer per year from the patients on their list. If a GP sees a patient with red flag symptoms, they are normally well versed on the most appropriate course of action. The problem is patients with red flag symptoms often already have a more aggressive form of cancer. To diagnose cancer earlier, more must be done to help GPs test patients with vague symptoms.
